Leisure World is a special kind of neighborhood in Maricopa County, Arizona, USA. It's a gated community, which means it has fences and gates to control who comes in and out. It's also an age-restricted community, so most people living there are 55 years old or older.

This community is like a small town all by itself, even though it's surrounded by the city of Mesa. It was started in 1973. Leisure World has about 2,664 homes, including nearly 500 condominiums and over 2,100 single family residences.

How Leisure World is Managed

Leisure World is run by a group called a homeowners' association (HOA). Think of an HOA as a local government for the community. It makes sure everything runs smoothly.

Community Leadership

The community is divided into seven areas, called voter districts. Each district chooses a representative. These representatives form a group called the board of directors. This board makes important decisions for the whole community.

Services Provided by the HOA

Because Leisure World is a special area not directly part of a city, the HOA provides many services that a city usually would. These include:

  • Hiring private security to keep everyone safe.
  • Collecting fees from residents to pay for community upkeep.
  • Repairing roads inside the community.
  • Arranging for fire and ambulance services.
  • Managing trash collection and recycling.
  • Making sure buildings follow rules and inspecting new construction.

Keeping Residents Safe

Leisure World has its own private security team. For more serious police matters, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department helps the residents.

Emergency Services

If there's a fire or someone needs medical help, the Rural Metro fire department provides these services through a special agreement with the community.
