Lekh Tandon (born February 13, 1929 – died October 15, 2017) was a famous Indian filmmaker and actor. He directed many popular Bollywood movies and TV shows. He became well-known for directing hit films like Professor, Prince, Ek Baar Kaho, and Agar Tum Na Hote. His movies Amrapali, starring Vyjayanthimala, and Agar Tum Na Hote, with Rajesh Khanna, are considered classics. Later, after the year 2000, he also acted in films such as Swades, Rang De Basanti, Chennai Express, and Chaarfutiya Chhokare. Lekh Tandon was the brother of the famous Urdu writer Yograj Tandon.

Lekh Tandon's Life and Career
Lekh Tandon's father, Faqeer Chand Tandon, was friends with the well-known actor Prithviraj Kapoor. They had studied together in school. Kapoor inspired Lekh to work in the Indian film industry, Bollywood. At the same time, Lekh's brother, Yograj, was already working as an assistant director for Kapoor.
Starting as a Director
Lekh Tandon began his career in the Hindi movie industry in the 1950s. He started as an assistant director. He soon became a director himself, creating several successful movies. His first big hit was Professor.
Even though some of his films, like Jhuk Gaya Aasman, did not earn a lot of money at the box office, they are still seen as important movies today. His successful films as a director include Prince, Ek Baar Kaho, and Agar Tum Na Hote. Many people especially remember Agar Tum Na Hote, which starred Rajesh Khanna.
Directing Hit Films
One of his biggest hits was Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaye. The lead actress, Rameshwari, said that Lekh Tandon was involved in every part of making the film. She also mentioned that the movie became popular even without much advertising.
Another actor, Victor Banerjee, who worked with Lekh Tandon in the film Doosri Dulhan, described him as a director who truly "loved his craft." This means he was very skilled and passionate about filmmaking. For Agar Tum Na Hote, Rajesh Khanna won the Best Actor award, and Lekh Tandon won the Best Director award in 1983.
Moving to Television
After directing movies, Lekh Tandon started directing TV shows. His first TV show was Phir Wahi Talash on India's national TV channel, Doordarshan. He is also known for discovering the famous actor Shah Rukh Khan. Lekh Tandon cast Shah Rukh Khan in his TV show Dil Dariya. He also directed the TV show Farmaan in the early 1990s.
Awards and Special Mentions
Lekh Tandon received several awards and special recognitions for his work:
- He shared the Filmfare Best Screenplay Award in 1978 for his movie Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaye. He shared this award with Vrajendra Gaur and Madhusudan Kalekar.
- His film Amrapali, starring Vyjayanthimala and Sunil Dutt, was chosen to represent India at the Academy Awards in 1966.
- He won the Best Director Award for his film Agar Tum Na Hote in 1983. This award was given by the Filmfans Association of India.
