Leo Lake is a small, beautiful glacial lake located in Manitoba, Canada. It is about 15 km (9.3 mi) northeast of Bakers Narrows. This lake is special because it was formed by glaciers long ago. Leo Lake drains into Thompson Lake and is part of the larger Nelson River watershed, which eventually flows into Hudson Bay.
About Leo Lake
Leo Lake is found in the Churchill River Upland area, which is part of the Midwestern Canadian Shield forests. Imagine a landscape filled with trees! The lake is surrounded by a mixed forest. Here you can find different types of trees like black spruce, white spruce, jack pine, and trembling aspen.
The areas around the shoreline are often wet and spongy. This type of ground is called muskeg. It's a kind of boggy wetland that can be tricky to walk through! The name "Leo Lake" was officially recognized in 1979.
Fun Activities: Canoeing!
Leo Lake is a popular spot for adventurers who love to canoe. It is part of a well-known canoe trip called the "Mistik Creek Loop". This exciting route is about 80 km (50 mi) long. Most people can paddle the entire loop in about four days.
The canoe trip starts and ends at Bakers Narrows. From Leo Lake, you can take special paths called portages to reach other lakes. There is a portage north to Alberts Lake and another one south to Flintoba Lake. It's a great way to explore the wilderness!
