History of Leonard
The area where Leonard is now located first got a post office in 1899. This post office stayed open for many years until it closed in 1991. The city was named after Leonard French, who was the son of an early business owner in the area.
Leonard officially became a village on June 12, 1922. The very first head of the village council was Nels Strand. Other early leaders included David Payne, Carl Erickson, and Maurice Johnson, who served as trustees. C. O. (Oscar) Lundmark was the city clerk. August Stenlund and John Carlson were the first justices of the peace, and Henry Hagen and Ferd Isackson were the first constables.
Geography and Location
Leonard is a small city with a total area of about 0.46 square miles (1.2 square kilometers). All of this area is land, meaning there are no lakes or rivers within the city limits.
The city is located along State Highway 223 (MN 223). It is also connected by several county roads, including County Roads 2, 10, 14, and 23.
