Leonard Michaels (born January 2, 1933 – died May 10, 2003) was an American writer. He was known for his short stories, novels, and essays.

Early Life and School

Leonard Michaels was born in New York City. His father was from Poland. He went to New York University and earned a bachelor's degree. Later, he studied at the University of Michigan. There, he earned a master's degree and a PhD in English literature.

After finishing his studies, Michaels moved to Berkeley, California. He lived there for most of his life. He became a professor of English at the University of California.

Writing Career

Leonard Michaels started his writing career by publishing short stories.

First Books

In 1969, his first book came out. It was called Going Places and was a collection of short stories.

His next book, I Would Have Saved Them If I Could, was also a collection of short stories. It was published in 1975. Many people thought this book was just as good as his first one.

Novels and Films

Michaels wrote his first novel, The Men's Club, in 1981. This book is a funny story about men who gather in a support group. It looks at the silly things men sometimes do.

In 1986, The Men's Club was made into a movie. Leonard Michaels wrote the screenplay for the film himself. Famous actors like Roy Scheider and Harvey Keitel starred in it.

His second and last novel, Sylvia, was published in 1992. This book includes parts from Michaels' own diary. Some of these diary entries were later published as a separate book called Time Out of Mind in 1999.

Magazine Contributions

In the 1990s, Leonard Michaels often wrote for The New Yorker magazine. This is a very well-known magazine in the United States.

Other Facts

Besides writing, Leonard Michaels was a Professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley.

He also took part in protests against the Vietnam War. These protests happened in the San Francisco Bay area. Even so, he described himself as someone who wasn't very interested in politics.

Leonard Michaels passed away in 2003. He is buried at Oakmont Memorial Park in Lafayette, California.

His Family

Leonard Michaels had a daughter with his third wife, the poet Brenda Hillman. His son, Jesse Michaels, was from his second marriage. Jesse became the singer and main songwriter for the famous underground punk rock band Operation Ivy.
