The Leptomantis angulirostris, also known as the masked tree frog, is a type of frog. It belongs to the tree frog family. You can find it in Indonesia and Malaysian Borneo. This frog lives in wet, warm forests and near rivers. Sadly, its home is shrinking because of habitat loss.

What Does the Masked Tree Frog Look Like?

This frog is quite small. Male frogs are about 31 to 33 millimeters long. Female frogs are a bit bigger, from 45 to 51 millimeters long. Their heads are wider than they are long. They have a pointed snout with a sharp ridge, called a canthus rostralis, running from the snout to the eye.

Their fingers and toes have wide, flat tips. This helps them grip surfaces. Their feet have almost full webbing between the toes. This webbing reaches the toe pad on all toes except the fourth one. Their hands have some webbing, but it only goes partway up their fingers.

The skin on their back is smooth. But on their chest and belly, it feels bumpy. Their skin color can change a lot. It can be light grey-green or brown. They often have dark stripes on their back near their bottom and on their legs.

The sides of their body and the inside of their legs are yellow. They also have black spots there. Sometimes, they have a few light brown spots on their snout. Their eyes are brown, often with a hint of blue.

Where Does the Masked Tree Frog Live?

This frog is believed to live in Sumatra and Malaysian Borneo. However, scientists are still checking if it truly lives in Sumatra. It is commonly found in the Crocker Range and at Mt. Kinabalu National Park.

These frogs live in untouched rainforests. They prefer areas along rocky streams. You can find them at high places, usually over 1,000 meters (about 3,280 feet) above sea level.

How Does the Masked Tree Frog Behave?

Male masked tree frogs make calls while sitting on small trees or plants. These plants usually hang over streams. This is how they attract mates.

The young frogs, called tadpoles, live in shallow parts of streams. They hide underneath gravel.
