History of Leslie
In 1819, Arkansas became a separate territory from Missouri. Later, in 1836, Arkansas officially became a state.
The area where Leslie is now was originally called Wiley's Cove. It was named after an Indian chief named Wiley. Another chief, Al, lived in a nearby area called Al's Cove.
Samuel Leslie was an early settler. He built a home and also owned a store and trading post. It is said that he gave away some of his land to encourage more people to move to the community.
The name Wiley's Cove was changed to Leslie on November 9, 1887. This change was requested by Andrew Jackson Leslie, who wanted to honor his father, Samuel Leslie.
Education in Leslie
Students in Leslie attend schools that are part of the Searcy County School District. The schools for this area include Marshall ABC Preschool, Marshall Elementary School, Leslie Intermediate School, and Marshall High School.
Before 2004, Leslie had its own school district, the Leslie School District. It had one school for all grades from kindergarten to 12th grade. However, in 2004, a new Arkansas law required school districts to have at least 350 students. Because Leslie's district had fewer students, it joined with the Marshall School District to form the Searcy County School District.
Leslie High School closed in 2007, and high school students began going to Marshall High School. The remaining school in Leslie, which was once Leslie Elementary, became Leslie Intermediate School in 2012. It now serves students in grades 4-6 from across the entire Searcy County district.
