Lewellen is a small village in Nebraska. It covers an area of about 0.96 square kilometers (0.37 square miles). All of this area is land. It is located in Garden County.
Lewellen's Past
The Battle of Ash Hollow
A very important historical event happened near Lewellen. This was the Battle of Ash Hollow in September 1855. It is also called the Battle of Blue Water Creek. This battle was part of the First Sioux War.
The United States Army, with about 600 soldiers, attacked a camp of the Brule Sioux people. The Sioux were led by Chief Little Thunder. This attack was in response to an earlier event. The Army killed many people, including women and children. They also took about 70 women and children as captives.
How Lewellen Started
Samuel P. Delatour came to this area in 1884. He started a ranch at Blue Creek. Lewellen was officially planned and laid out in 1906. This was around the time a railroad line was extended to this spot.
Lewellen was first part of Deuel County. Later, in 1910, it became part of Garden County. The village was named after Frank Lewellen. He arrived in the area in 1886. Frank Lewellen opened a small store and a post office there. By the end of 1919, about 400 people lived in Lewellen.
