Biography of Liamine Zéroual
Liamine Zéroual was born in Batna, Algeria. When he was 16 years old, in 1957, he joined the National Liberation Army. This army was fighting for Algeria's freedom from French rule.
Military Training and Commands
After Algeria became independent, Zéroual received special military training. He trained in different countries, including Cairo, Egypt, Moscow, Soviet Union, and Paris, France.
In 1975, he became the commander of a military school in Batna. Later, in 1981, he took charge of the important Cherchell Military Academy. He then commanded different military regions across Algeria. These included the Tamanrasset region in 1982 and the region near the Moroccan border in 1984. In 1987, he commanded the military region of Constantine.
In 1988, Liamine Zéroual became a general. The next year, in 1989, he was made the head of the ground forces for the army.
Path to Presidency
Zéroual left the army for a short time in 1989. He then worked as an ambassador for Algeria in Romania.
However, his career changed when Algeria's president, Chadli Bendjedid, stepped down in 1992. In July 1993, Zéroual became the Minister of Defense. This was a very important role.
In January 1994, he was chosen to lead the High Council of State. This council was in charge of the country at the time. In November 1995, Liamine Zéroual was elected President of Algeria. He stayed in this position until the next elections in 1999.
During his time as president, Algeria was going through a difficult period known as the Algerian Civil War. Zéroual was known for trying to find peaceful solutions through talks and negotiations.
One notable event during his presidency was the hijacking of Air France Flight 8969 in December 1994. After some difficult moments, Zéroual allowed the hijacked plane to leave Algerian territory.
Later Life
Some people wanted Zéroual to run for president again in the 2009 election. However, he announced in January 2009 that he would not run. He also suggested that it might not be good for democracy if the current president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, ran for a third term.
