Discovering Liedekerke's Past
Liedekerke has a long and interesting history. From the time of the Carolingian kings until the 11th century, it was part of the area known as Brabant.
How Liedekerke Became a County
Around the years 1056 to 1059, a powerful leader named Baldwin V, Count of Flanders gained control of part of Liedekerke. He received this land from the German emperor. This new county stretched between the Scheldt and Dender rivers. It included Liedekerke and other villages along the Dender. The name "Liekercke" was first written down in 1092. It means "church on the little hill."
The Liedekerke Castle
The dukes of Brabant had a strong fortress near the Dender river. It was on the land of Denderleeuw. This fortress and Liedekerke formed a single large estate. Later, through a marriage, the Hénin-Liétard family became the lords of the castle.
Changes Over Time
Between 1796 and 1815, French forces occupied the area. During this time, Liedekerke became part of a French department called the Dyle. In 1815, it became part of South Brabant. Sadly, the old castle was destroyed during this period.
