The Lillie and Hugh Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden is a beautiful outdoor space where art and nature come together. Located at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) in Houston, Texas, it's a special type of park called a sculpture garden. This means that amazing sculptures are placed throughout the garden for everyone to enjoy.
The garden was designed by the famous artist and landscape architect Isamu Noguchi. It features over 25 incredible sculptures from the museum's collection. You can see works by world-famous artists like Henri Matisse and Alexander Calder. Some pieces were even made just for this garden, like Houston Triptych by Ellsworth Kelly. The garden also celebrates local talent with sculptures by Texas artists.
How the Garden Was Created
The idea for the sculpture garden began in 1969. The Brown Foundation, Inc. gave money to the museum to buy two city blocks of land. This gave them enough space to build a proper garden for their sculptures.
The museum hired Isamu Noguchi, a well-known artist, to design the garden's layout. In 1978, the Houston City Council decided to name the garden after Lillie and Hugh Roy Cullen. This was to honor them for their generous support of art and medicine in the city.
Construction started on February 6, 1984. After two years of work, the Lillie and Hugh Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden officially opened to the public on April 5, 1986.
