Limestone is a small community in Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. It is known as a hamlet, which is a type of small settlement. It is also a census-designated place, meaning it's an area identified by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes.

In 2010, about 389 people lived in Limestone. It is located in the southern part of the town of Carrollton. Limestone is about 6 miles (10 km) north of Bradford, Pennsylvania. The name "Limestone" might come from how quickly some old bones found there turned into white dust when exposed to air.

History of Limestone

Limestone officially became a village in 1877. This meant it had its own local government.

However, in 2008, many people living in the village wanted to change things. About 187 residents signed a petition to dissolve the village. This would mean it would no longer be a separate village government.

People thought that dissolving the village would lower taxes for everyone. Village residents might see their taxes drop by 4%. Town residents could see a bigger drop, around 46%. Also, the town would get $750,000 in state money if the village dissolved.

On October 13, 2009, people voted on whether to dissolve the village. Out of 229 registered voters, 97 people voted. Most of them, 71 people, voted in favor of dissolving the village. The dissolution became official on January 1, 2011.

Limestone Schools

Limestone used to have its own school district called Limestone Central School. Their mascot was the Tigers. This school was located in the village until 1995.

In 1995, Limestone Central School joined with Allegany Central School. They formed a new, larger school district called Allegany-Limestone Central School. The old Limestone school building stayed open as an elementary school for a while.

However, by 2010, only 67 students were attending the elementary school. This number was too low to keep the building open. So, the school building closed down.
