Lincolnia is a special kind of community in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. It's called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that looks like a town but isn't officially a city or town with its own local government.
In 2020, about 22,922 people lived in Lincolnia. This was a big jump in population from the year 2000!
Where is Lincolnia?
Lincolnia is located in the eastern part of Fairfax County. It's near several other communities. To the east, you'll find the city of Alexandria. Other nearby places include Franconia to the south and Annandale to the west.
Major roads pass through Lincolnia. Interstate 395 runs through the southern part of the area. This highway can take you northeast into Washington, D.C.. Another important road is Virginia State Route 236 (Little River Turnpike), which goes through the middle of Lincolnia.
The total area of Lincolnia is about 12.3 square kilometers (about 4.7 square miles). Only a very small part of this area is water.
Who Lives in Lincolnia?
Lincolnia has grown quite a bit over the years. In 1970, about 10,761 people lived there. By 2020, the population had more than doubled to 22,922 people.
Lincolnia is known for being a very diverse place in Fairfax County. This means people from many different backgrounds and cultures live there. In 2000, about 15,788 people lived in Lincolnia. Many households had children under 18 living with them. The average household had about three people.
Lincolnia's Past
Lincolnia has an interesting history. It was first created after the American Civil War as a community for people who had been freed from slavery. For over 100 years, it was one of the main African American communities in Fairfax County.
During a time when people of different races were kept separate (called segregation), Lincolnia had its own school. This old school building is still standing today! It's now part of the Lincolnia Senior Center, which is a place for older adults.
In 1962, the school became integrated. This meant that students of all races could attend together. To help with this, students were sometimes moved by bus to different schools to create a mix of races.
