Linda is an old ghost town located in the Linda Valley in Tasmania, Australia. It is found within the West Coast Range mountains. Sometimes, people also called it Linda Valley.

The Rise and Fall of Linda

Linda was once a busy place. It was close to another mining community called North Mount Lyell. This area was high on a ridge between two mountains, Mount Owen and Mount Lyell.

In 1903, a big company called Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company took over North Mount Lyell. After this, Linda quickly became less important. Most people living in Linda moved to nearby towns. They went to Gormanston or Queenstown. These towns were also part of the Mount Lyell mining area.

What Was in Linda?

Linda had a Post Office that opened on December 18, 1899. It stayed open until 1966. A building called the Royal Hotel was built in 1901. Sadly, it burned down in 1910 but was rebuilt. After 1952, the hotel was left empty. It was sold again in 2020.

Linda's Railway Connection

Linda had a railway station. This station was the end point for two important transport systems. One was the Linda aerial ropeway, which carried materials through the air. The other was the North Mount Lyell Railway.

Copper ore was a valuable metal mined nearby. It was taken from the mine to special factories called smelters. These smelters were in a place called Crotty. Today, Crotty is under the water of Lake Burbury. After the copper was made, it was taken to a port. This port was Pillinger, located on the shores of Macquarie Harbour at Kelly Basin.

Today, you can find the remains of Linda next to the Lyell Highway. This highway is just east of Queenstown.

Linda's New Beginning

In the 2020s, Linda started to come back to life. There was activity at the old hotel site. The property was bought in 2021. It has since been turned into a new place called Linda Cafe.
