Lindeniidae is a group, or family, of dragonflies. These amazing insects are mostly found in Australia.
Some scientists have different ideas about this family. They believe that the dragonflies in the Lindeniidae group are actually part of a larger family called Gomphidae. However, other scientists think Lindeniidae is a unique family all on its own!
What are Genera?
Inside a family, there are smaller groups called genera (that's the plural of genus). A genus is a group of very similar living things. The Lindeniidae family includes a few different genera, some of which are only known from fossils.
- †Burmalindenia Schädel and Bechly 2016
* This is an extinct genus. The dagger symbol () means it no longer lives on Earth. Fossils of Burmalindenia have been found in Burmese amber. Amber is like fossilized tree sap, which can perfectly preserve ancient insects! These fossils date back to a time called the Cenomanian age.
- †Cratolindenia Bechly 2000
* Another extinct genus, Cratolindenia was discovered as fossils in the Crato Formation in Brazil. These fossils are from an even older time, known as the Aptian age.
- Ictinogomphus Cowley, 1934
* This genus includes dragonflies that are still alive today! One example is Ictinogomphus australis, which is sometimes called the Australian Tiger dragonfly because of its striped body.
