Lindsay's Early Rowing Journey
Lindsay Shoop was born in Charlottesville, Virginia. She started her rowing career a bit later than some athletes. During her junior year at the University of Virginia (UVA), she decided to join the rowing team. This decision changed her life!
After finishing her degree in Spanish, Lindsay continued to row for UVA for three more spring seasons. This helped her become a stronger and more skilled rower.
Training for the National Team
In 2004, Lindsay moved to Princeton, New Jersey. This was a big step because she went there to train with the national team coaches. At first, she trained in a single boat. This means she rowed by herself.
By the spring of 2005, she switched back to "sweep boats." In sweep rowing, each rower uses only one oar. This is different from "sculling," where rowers use two oars.
Winning World Championships
That summer, Lindsay competed in the World Championships in Japan. She raced in both the "pair" (two rowers) and the "eight" (eight rowers plus a coxswain). Her eight-person team finished in fourth place.
Over the next four years, Lindsay became a world champion! Her women's eight team won gold medals at the World Championships in 2006, 2007, and 2009.
Setting a World Record
In 2006, Lindsay's team set a new world record in Eton, England. They finished the race in an amazing 5 minutes and 55.5 seconds! They also won the Henley Royal Regatta that year, setting a course record there too.
Olympic Gold Medalist
The biggest win came in 2008 at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Lindsay was in the second seat of the Olympic Champion Women's Eight boat. Her team brought home the first American Rowing Olympic Gold medal in 24 years! It was also the only gold medal won by the U.S. in rowing at the full 2,000-meter distance that year.
Other Achievements
From 2005 onwards, Lindsay also competed in eight World Cups. These are major international rowing competitions. She won five medals in these events, racing in the pair, eight, or both.
She also medaled three times at the Head of the Charles Regatta. This is a famous race held in the United States. In 2007, her crew set a new course record there. Lindsay also won several other national races and selection events.
Life After Professional Rowing
In 2012, Lindsay started a new chapter. She became an assistant coach for the men's rowing team at Pine Crest School in Florida. The next year, in 2013, she took charge of the entire rowing program there.
Lindsay left Pine Crest in 2014 to pursue other goals in her life. In the summer of 2021, she joined Brendan Burke to commentate on rowing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
