Lion Island is a small island located near Antarctica. It is about 2.8 kilometers (1.7 miles) long and 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles) wide. This island is special because its shape looks like a sleeping lion when you see it from certain angles!
About Lion Island
Lion Island is part of the Palmer Archipelago. This is a group of islands off the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. The island is found off the east side of Anvers Island. It is also about 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles) northeast of Cape Astrup on Wiencke Island.
How it was Found
The island was first discovered by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition. This journey took place between 1897 and 1899. The expedition was led by a brave explorer named Adrien de Gerlache.
Naming the Island
The name "Lion Island" first appeared on a map in 1927. This map was made after a survey by people from the "Discovery Investigations." They were working on a ship called the RRS Discovery. The island got its name because its shape, especially from the southwest, looks like a lion lying down.
