Lippe is a special kind of district in Germany. It is located in the eastern part of North Rhine-Westphalia, which is a state in Germany.

The district of Lippe gets its name from the old Lords of Lippe. They used to rule a historic country called the Principality of Lippe. This principality was a state within the Holy Roman Empire a long time ago. Today, Lippe is an important district in modern Germany.

Lippe's Story

The last prince who ruled Lippe had to step down in 1918. This happened after World War I ended. Germany became a republic, which means it was run by elected leaders, not a prince. Lippe then became a "Free State" within this new German republic.

Later, in 1932, the state of Lippe was split into two smaller districts. These were called Detmold and Lemgo. Many years later, in 1973, these two districts came back together. They merged to form the district of Lippe as we know it today.

Symbol of Lippe: The Coat of Arms

Kreiswappen des Kreises Lippe
The official coat of arms for the Lippe district.

The coat of arms is like a special symbol for a place. Lippe's coat of arms shows a traditional rose. This rose is a very old symbol of the state of Lippe. The district of Lippe covers almost the same area as the historic country.

In the middle of the rose, you can see 16 small parts called stamens. These 16 stamens stand for the 16 cities and towns in the district. This coat of arms was officially given to Lippe in 1973. Even though Lippe is not a huge area, its rose symbol is very important. It is one of only three symbols found on the coat of arms for the entire state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
