History of Lisbon
Lisbon was first settled in 1836. It began with a simple log tavern and a main road that connected the towns of Joliet and Chicago. Because of this important road, the community quickly grew.
Soon, Lisbon had its own post office, other businesses, and a schoolhouse. The town became part of Kendall County in 1841. A person named John Moore is believed to have named Lisbon Township. The name "Lisbon" has origins from Portugal.
In 1896, a local newspaper, the Kendall County News, mentioned how happy the villagers seemed. Even though they were ten miles from a railroad, they appeared to be living well.
Geography of Lisbon
Lisbon is located in the southern part of Kendall County. It is about 12 miles south of Yorkville, which is the main town of the county. The village is also about 22 miles west of Joliet.
U.S. Route 52 is a major road that goes through the north side of Lisbon. This road leads east towards Joliet and west towards Troy Grove, which is about 32 miles away.
In 2016, Lisbon covered a total area of about 15.3 square kilometers (5.9 square miles). Most of this area, about 12.4 square kilometers (4.8 square miles), is land. The rest, about 2.9 square kilometers (1.1 square miles), is water.
