Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country with a rich history, and that includes its food! Many special types of cheeses come from here. Each type often has its own unique versions too. These cheeses are made in different ways, using milk from cows, sheep, or goats. They are a big part of the country's traditional food culture.

Special Labels for Cheeses

Some foods get a special label to show where they come from. This label means the food is made in a certain place, using traditional methods. It helps protect the food's unique quality and history. Think of it like a special badge of honor for food!

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, people are working to get these special labels for their cheeses. To help with this, the Association of Cheese Producers in Bosnia and Herzegovina (AoCP BiH) was started in 2012. This group brings together cheese makers from all over the country. It includes big companies, small farms, and even individual cheese makers.

Some important local groups are the Association of producers of the traditional Livno cheese "Cincar" and "Cincar 2" Agricultural Cooperative". There's also a special place called the Center for Sack Cheese Maturation (Serbo-Croatian: Centar za zrenje sira iz mijeha). This center helps make sure a special type of cheese, called sack cheese, is made correctly.
