List of MPs not excluded from the English parliament in 1648 facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Imagine a time when England was going through huge changes! This page is about the Rump Parliament, which was a special part of the Long Parliament. This Parliament started when King Charles I was on the throne and continued even after he was gone, during a time called the Commonwealth.

In December 1648, something big happened. The army, led by Oliver Cromwell, took control and stopped many Members of Parliament (MPs) from entering the building. This event is known as Pride's Purge. It left many areas of England without their representatives in Parliament. Even some MPs who weren't officially stopped chose not to take part. The Rump Parliament was eventually closed down in 1653, but it was brought back together in 1659 before finally ending for good.

This list originally showed the MPs who were part of the Parliament after 1648. For a look at who was in the House of Commons back in 1640, you can check out List of MPs elected to the English parliament in 1640 (November). If you want to see who was there just before Pride's Purge, there's a list at List of MPs in the English parliament in 1645 and after.
