List of MPs in the English parliament in 1645 and after facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

This article is about the people who were members of Parliament (MPs) during the second half of the Long Parliament. This was a very important time in English history, starting when King Charles I was on the throne and continuing into a period called the Commonwealth, when England was a republic without a king.

The Long Parliament first met on November 3, 1640. It was supposed to be a regular meeting of Parliament, but it ended up lasting for many years! By 1645, a lot of the original MPs were no longer there. Some were removed for different reasons, like supporting the King during the English Civil War, some died in the war, and others passed away naturally. Because of these empty spots, new elections were held around 1645 to bring in new MPs.

A big change happened in December 1648, when the army took control of Parliament. This event is known as Pride's Purge. Many MPs were forced out, creating a smaller group known as the Rump Parliament. Even some who weren't officially kicked out chose not to take part anymore. Although this Parliament was officially ended in 1653, it was actually brought back together briefly in 1659 before finally being dissolved for good.

This list focuses on the MPs who served in the Parliament after 1645. If you want to see who was in Parliament right at the beginning in 1640, you can check out the List of MPs elected to the English parliament in 1640 (November). There's also a list of MPs not excluded from the English parliament in 1648 if you're curious about who stayed.
