List of MPs elected to the English parliament in November 1640 facts for kids
This article is about the Members of Parliament (MPs) who were chosen in 1640 for a very important meeting called the Long Parliament. This Parliament started when King Charles I was still ruling and continued even into the time of the Commonwealth, a period when England was a republic without a king.
The Long Parliament was King Charles I's fifth and final Parliament. It began in Westminster on November 3, 1640. It kept meeting until April 20, 1653, when it was finally closed down. Five new areas, called constituencies, were added for this Parliament. These were Ashburton, Honiton, and Okehampton in Devon, plus Malton and Northallerton in Yorkshire.
This Parliament lasted a very long time, and it was a period of great change and fighting, known as the English Civil War. Because of this, many MPs came and went. At the start, some MPs were chosen for more than one area. This led to new elections or arguments about who should be the MP. Some of these arguments were never settled.
In the first year, many MPs left Parliament. Some were made Lords by King Charles I, who wanted to make the House of Lords stronger. Others were removed because they were involved in unfair business practices (called monopolists) or were trying to cause trouble. As the country fell into Civil War, the Parliament in Westminster split. Over 150 MPs decided to support the King and met in Oxford instead. Almost all of these MPs were later removed from their positions. Sadly, several MPs on both sides were killed in the fighting, in addition to those who died from natural causes. By about 1645, new MPs were being elected to replace those who had been removed or had died.
In December 1648, the army took control of Parliament. Many MPs were forced out during an event called Pride's Purge. This left a much smaller group of MPs, known as the Rump Parliament. Even some who were not officially removed chose not to take part in Parliament's work. Although the Parliament was officially closed in 1653, and other Parliaments were called, the Long Parliament was brought back together in 1659 before being finally dissolved.
This list shares details about the MPs who were first chosen in 1640 and shortly after. For information about the MPs who joined later, after 1645, you can look at List of MPs in the English parliament in 1645 and after. There is also a list of MPs not excluded from the English parliament in 1648.
