Life Story of Edward Leigh

Edward Leigh was born in Shawell, Leicestershire. His father, Sir Henry Leigh, was an important person in Staffordshire. Edward went to Magdalen Hall, Oxford university when he was 15 years old. He studied there and earned his degrees. After Oxford, he studied law and history. He also spent some time in France.

Edward Leigh was made a knight in 1632. He was known for his strong religious views. When the English Civil War began, he joined the Parliamentary Army. He became a colonel. In 1645, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Stafford. He was part of the Long Parliament. His knowledge of religious topics also earned him a place in the Westminster Assembly, a group that advised Parliament on religious matters.

In 1648, there was a big event called Pride's Purge. This is when some Members of Parliament were removed from the House of Commons. Edward Leigh was one of them. After this, he mostly stayed out of public life.
