The United States diplomatic mission to the Netherlands is like a special office that helps the U.S. and the Netherlands work together. It includes the main embassy building in The Hague and a smaller office in Amsterdam. These offices help Americans living or traveling in the Netherlands and also help keep good relationships between the two countries.
In 1782, John Adams, who later became a U.S. President, was chosen as America's first special representative to Holland. That same year, the Netherlands officially recognized the United States as an independent country. They also provided much-needed financial help, showing they believed in America's future. These loans were the first the new U.S. government received. Adams bought a house in The Hague, which became the very first U.S. embassy.
The current American Embassy building in The Hague opened on January 29, 2018. Many important Americans have served as ambassadors, including former Presidents Adams and John Quincy Adams.
Besides the main embassy, there's also a U.S. consulate-general on Curaçao. This office helps people in the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It's important to know that this consulate is separate from the U.S. diplomatic mission to the European part of the Netherlands.
April 19 is a special day for both countries. It's the day John Adams first presented his official papers in The Hague. Because of this, President Ronald Reagan declared April 19 as "Dutch-American Friendship Day."
