List of cities in Syria facts for kids

Syria is a country located in the Middle East. To help manage the country, Syria is divided into smaller parts. Think of it like how your country might have states or provinces. Syria has 14 main areas called governorates. These governorates are then split into 65 smaller areas called districts. Each district is then divided into even smaller parts called sub-districts. There are 284 sub-districts in total.

Most of these governorates, districts, and sub-districts have their own main city or town. This main city acts as the "capital" for that area. For example, the Rif Dimashq Governorate and its district, Markaz Rif Dimashq, are a bit different. They don't have their own official capital city within their borders. Instead, their main offices are located in the city of Damascus.

Each district usually shares its name with its main city. For instance, the Hama District has the city of Hama as its center. However, there are a few exceptions. For example, the Mount Simeon District has the city of Aleppo as its main center, even though the district is not called Aleppo. The same goes for the Mount Simeon Nahiyah (sub-district).

Syria has 65 districts, and almost all of them have a city that serves as their main administrative center. Only one district, Markaz Rif Dimashq, does not have an official center city.

The city of Damascus is very important. It acts as a governorate, a district, and a sub-district all at once! The Rif Dimashq Governorate does not have its own official center. Its main offices are located in Damascus.
