List of cities in Turkmenistan facts for kids
This article lists the main cities in Turkmenistan. Turkmenistan is a country in Central Asia. The government decides which places are called "cities" based on special rules.
Cities in Turkmenistan are grouped into three types:
- One city is like a whole province (this is the capital city, Ashgabat).
- Some cities are "equal to a district" (Turkmen: etrap hukukly).
- Other cities are "within a district" (Turkmen: etrapdaky).
For a city to be "equal to a district," it usually needs more than 30,000 people. It also has to be a provincial capital or an important center for business, culture, and government in its area.
Cities "within a district" are smaller. They need more than 8,000 people. They must also have factories, building companies, transport services, and places like schools, shops, and homes.
The government keeps a list of these cities, but it doesn't always share it online. The most recent official list was from 2012.

How Cities are Managed
Cities that are "equal to a district" and districts themselves are led by a häkim. This person is like a governor or mayor. The President chooses the häkim.
Three special cities – Ashgabat, Arkadag, and Turkmenbashy – are even bigger. They are divided into smaller areas called boroughs. Each borough also has its own häkim.
Smaller cities and towns have an elected council called a geňeş. The leader of this council is called an arçyn. The arçyn acts as both the head of the council and the mayor.
