List of colonial governors of Maryland facts for kids
Maryland started as a special colony owned by the Catholic Calvert family, known as the Lords Baltimore. They received a special paper, called a royal charter, from the King of England. The first eight governors of Maryland were chosen by this family.
However, when the Catholic King of England, James II, was removed from power in an event called the Glorious Revolution, the Calvert family lost their charter. Maryland then became a royal colony, meaning it was directly controlled by the English crown. For a short time, local Protestants governed the colony before 12 governors were sent directly from England. In 1715, the Calvert family got their charter back. They continued to appoint governors until the American Revolution.
Maryland's Early Governors
This section lists the people who were officially appointed as governors of Maryland during its colonial period. It includes those chosen by the Calvert family and those appointed by the English King or Queen. It does not include people who just claimed to be governors without a formal appointment.
