This article tells you about the leaders of the Comoros, a country that became independent from France in 1975. These leaders are called Presidents or Heads of State. They are in charge of the country's government.

How long can a President serve?

A new set of rules, called the 2018 constitution, changed how long a president can stay in office. Now, a president can serve for two terms, each lasting five years. They can be re-elected once.

Before this, the Comoros had a special system. The presidency would rotate between the three main islands: Grande Comore, Anjouan, and Mohéli. This meant a president from one island would serve one term, and then the next president would come from a different island. This system was designed to share power fairly among the islands.

Who takes over if the President can't serve?

Article 58 of the Comorian Constitution explains what happens if a President can no longer do their job. This could be due to resignation or other reasons.

  • If the President leaves office within the first 900 days (about 2.5 years) of their term:
    • The government ministers will choose one of themselves to be the temporary President.
    • New elections must be held within 60 days. The person who wins these elections will finish the rest of the original five-year presidential term.
  • If the President leaves office after the first 900 days of their term:
    • The Governor of the island that currently holds the presidency will become the President.
    • This Governor will serve until the end of the original five-year term. After that, regular elections will take place.
