The Little Black River (French: Rivière Noire) is a river that flows through southern Quebec in Canada and northern Maine in the United States.
Where the River Flows
The Little Black River starts in Témiscouata RCM, Quebec. Its source is at 47°24′47″N 69°31′01″W / 47.413°N 69.517°W. From there, it flows mostly east and southeast.
The river crosses the border between Canada and the United States. It then continues into Maine. Finally, it joins the Saint John River in Allagash, Maine. The Little Black River is about 62.9 kilometres (39.1 mi) long. It mostly flows through areas covered by forests.
River's Journey in Quebec
The first part of the river, about 19.4 kilometres (12.1 mi) long, is called the Black River in Quebec.
- It flows 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi) to the east. This part leads to the outlet of "Lac du Cinq" (which means Lake Five).
- Next, it flows 5.8 kilometres (3.6 mi) to the southeast. It passes under the Moulin Théberge Lake bridge.
- The river then travels 10.1 kilometres (6.3 mi) more to the southeast. It goes through "Lac Noir" (Black Lake), which is surrounded by a marshy area. This section ends at the border between Quebec and Maine.
River's Journey in Maine
After crossing the border, the river is called the Little Black River in Maine. This part is about 43.5 kilometres (27.0 mi) long.
- It flows 8.1 kilometres (5.0 mi) south. Here, it meets the West Branch Little Black River (Quebec–Maine) coming from the west.
- Then, it flows 0.2 kilometres (0.12 mi) south. It joins the Campbell Branch Little Black River coming from the southwest.
- The river continues 8.5 kilometres (5.3 mi) to the southeast. It passes Rocky Brook, which comes from the north.
- It then flows 6.0 kilometres (3.7 mi) east, going south of Boat Landing Mountain. It meets Hofey Brook coming from the north.
- Next, it goes 1.7 kilometres (1.1 mi) south. It collects water from Little Brook Hafey and then meets Knowland Brook from the southwest.
- The river winds 8.2 kilometres (5.1 mi) to the southeast. It passes Carrie Bogan Brook, which comes from the southwest.
- Finally, it flows 10.8 kilometres (6.7 mi) to the southeast. It passes between two groups of tall mountains, including Johnson Mountain and Kelly Brook Mountain. This leads to where the river joins the Saint John River.
The Little Black River ends in Allagash, Maine, in Aroostook County.
- This spot is about 1.3 kilometres (0.81 mi) downstream from St. Clair Island.
- It is also about 4.8 kilometres (3.0 mi) upstream from where the Allagash River joins the Saint John River.
- The end of the river is about 27.9 kilometres (17.3 mi) southeast of the Quebec-Maine border.
