The Little Manatee River is a beautiful river in Florida. It flows for about 51 miles (82 kilometers) through Hillsborough and Manatee counties before emptying into Tampa Bay. This river is an important part of Florida's natural environment and offers many chances for outdoor fun!

Where Does the Little Manatee River Flow?

The Little Manatee River starts east of Fort Lonesome, Florida, near Hwy 674. It then winds its way through southern Hillsborough County, Florida, passing by towns like Sun City, Florida and Gulf City, Florida. From there, it continues into northern Manatee County, Florida, finally reaching the large Tampa Bay.

The River's Journey to Tampa Bay

As the river travels, it collects water from a large area called its drainage basin. The Little Manatee River's drainage basin covers about 222 square miles (575 square kilometers). This means all the rain that falls in this big area eventually flows into the river.

Why Is the Little Manatee River Special?

Parts of the Little Manatee River are very important for nature. They have been given special titles to protect their beauty and wildlife.

Outstanding Florida Water

Some sections of the river, like Hayes Bayou and Mills Bayou, are called "Outstanding Florida Waters." This means they are super clean and healthy, and they need to be protected from pollution. It's like a special award for being a really great natural water body!

Part of an Aquatic Preserve

These special parts of the river are also included in the Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve. An aquatic preserve is an area set aside to protect underwater habitats and the plants and animals that live there. It helps keep the river's ecosystem healthy for future generations.

Little Manatee River State Park

The river also flows alongside the Little Manatee River State Park. This park is a wonderful place where people can enjoy nature. You can go kayaking, canoeing, fishing, or hiking along the river's banks. It's a great spot to see Florida's natural beauty up close!
