Little Mountain is a natural high point, also called a summit, located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. It might not be the tallest mountain, but it plays a special role in the landscape of this area. It helps to divide two very different landforms: the high, flat Cumberland Plateau and the lower, long Sequatchie Valley.

Where is Little Mountain?

Little Mountain is found in Bledsoe County, Tennessee. This county is in the eastern part of Tennessee. The mountain is located just west of a town called Pikeville. If you were looking at a map, you would see it as part of the larger Appalachian Mountains range.

Understanding the Landscape

Little Mountain is part of a bigger geographical feature called the Cumberland Plateau. A plateau is like a very large, flat tableland that is much higher than the land around it. The Cumberland Plateau stretches across parts of Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, and Alabama.

The Cumberland Escarpment

Little Mountain is also a key part of something called the Cumberland Escarpment. An escarpment is a long, steep slope or cliff that separates two areas of different heights. Think of it like a giant step in the land. In this case, the Cumberland Escarpment forms the edge of the high Cumberland Plateau.

The Sequatchie Valley

On one side of the Cumberland Escarpment, you have the high plateau. On the other side, you find the Sequatchie Valley. A valley is a low area of land between hills or mountains. The Sequatchie Valley is a long, narrow valley that runs through southeastern Tennessee. It's known for its rich farmland and unique natural features. Little Mountain helps to mark the boundary between these two distinct parts of the landscape.
