Little My (which means "Little Mu" in Swedish) is a popular character from the Moomin books. These books were written by the famous author Tove Jansson. Little My first appeared in the book The Exploits of Moominpappa in 1950. She is a very small and strong-willed character. She is also quite independent. Little My can be bold and sometimes a bit naughty. But she can also be a really good friend when she wants to be. She is the younger sister of the Mymble's daughter. Eventually, the kind Moomin family adopted her.

Her name comes from the Greek alphabet. The twelfth letter, μ (mu), is pronounced "my" in Swedish. In science, the symbol μ means "one-millionth." This shows how tiny Little My is!

About Little My

Her Personality

Little My is a very determined character. She often gets her way when she talks to others. She is good at winning arguments. Little My uses both feelings and smart ideas to make her point. She might tease people or make their ideas sound silly. She also uses actions to show what she thinks. This makes her a unique and memorable friend.

Where She Appears

Little My is in many of the Moomin books. Here are some of her main adventures:

  • The Exploits of Moominpappa (Book 4) – Little My is born on a summer day. She is the smallest of all the Mymble's children. She is so tiny you can barely see her! In this book, she doesn't do much. But she does show she likes mischief. She also finds disasters quite interesting.
  • Moominsummer Madness (Book 5) – In this book, Little My is bigger. She can now join in more of the story. She is still small enough for Snufkin to carry her in his pocket. Her older sister, The Mymble's daughter, tries to teach her good manners. But it doesn't work very well! Little My gets separated from the others. Snufkin rescues her. She then travels with him. They even help a group of other children.
  • Moominland Midwinter (Book 6) – Little My is one of the only characters to wake up. She experiences winter for the first time. Unlike Moomintroll, she loves the cold world right away. She especially enjoys winter sports.
  • Tales from Moominvalley (Book 7) – This book has short stories. Little My is in three of them. In "A Tale of Horror," she tells scary stories. In "The Last Dragon on Earth," she acts like a curious and sometimes rude younger sibling to Moomintroll. In "The Invisible Child," she helps an invisible girl become visible again. She has her own special ways of helping!
  • Moominpappa at Sea (Book 8) – Little My goes with the Moomin family to a lighthouse island. She is always there in the book. She is the only one who quickly enjoys the new life. She stays happy and cheerful throughout their adventure.

Little My also plays a big part in other Moomin stories. These include the picture books The Book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My and An Unwanted Guest. She has a small speaking role in The Dangerous Journey. She also appears silently in Who Will Comfort Toffle?. She is mentioned in Moominvalley in November. But she doesn't appear in person in that book.

You can also see Little My in many Moomin cartoons and movies. She is a major character in most TV series and comic strips.
