Moominpappa grew up in an orphanage. When he was young, he left to explore the world. Now, he has settled down and is a loving and responsible father to his family. He often feels a strong pull towards the sea, though he isn't sure why.
He almost always wears his special black top hat. Inside the hat, it says "M.P. from your M.M." This helps him tell his hat apart from any other top hats. Moominpappa once even lived on a ship with three Hattifatteners for a few days. He wanted to observe how they behaved.
