This pond is super important because it helps provide drinking water for the city of New Bedford. Think of it as a giant natural water bottle for thousands of people!

Little Quittacas Pond: A Water Wonder

Little Quittacas Pond is found in the southeastern part of Massachusetts. It stretches across two towns: Lakeville and Rochester. This pond is actually a reservoir, which means it's a place where water is collected and stored. It's a key part of the water supply system for New Bedford, a large city nearby.

The Five Great Ponds of Southeastern Massachusetts

Little Quittacas Pond is one of five really big ponds in this area. These are often called the "Great Ponds." The other four are Long Pond, Assawompset Pond, Pocksha Pond, and Great Quittacas Pond. Together, these five ponds form the largest natural freshwater system in Massachusetts.

Water for New Bedford

The water from Little Quittacas Pond and the other Great Ponds is managed by the New Bedford Water Works. This organization makes sure that clean, safe drinking water reaches the homes and businesses in New Bedford. It's a big job to keep such an important water supply healthy!

How the Ponds are Connected

Most of the Great Ponds, including Little Quittacas, are connected. Their water eventually flows into Narragansett Bay through the Taunton River. However, there's one pond called Snipatuit Pond that's a bit different. It flows into Buzzards Bay through the Mattapoisett River. Snipatuit Pond is connected to Great Quittacas Pond by a small stream called Snipituit Brook.
