The little blue or azure dartlet (scientific name: Amphiallagma parvum) is a type of damselfly. Damselflies are small, delicate insects that look a lot like dragonflies. This particular species belongs to the Coenagrionidae family. You can find the little blue damselfly in several countries in South Asia. These include India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, and Nepal. It might also live in Bangladesh.

What the Little Blue Damselfly Looks Like

The little blue damselfly is a small insect. It has bright sky-blue eyes that have a small black cap on top. Its body, called the thorax, is black on the upper side. It has two wide, bright blue stripes on its back, outlined in black. The sides of its body are a pale blue color.

The abdomen, which is the long part of its body, is also pale blue. It has black markings on the top up to segment 7. Segments 8, 9, and 10 are blue. The very last segment, number 10, has a thin black stripe down the middle.

Differences Between Males and Females

Female little blue damselflies look quite similar to males. However, their eyes and the main color of their thorax are usually greenish-yellow instead of blue. The black markings on their abdomen cover all segments. The sides of their abdomen are also pale blue. Interestingly, some females can even have colors that look just like the males!

Where the Little Blue Damselfly Lives

You can often find the little blue damselfly near water. They like to live among the plants along the edges of ponds, lakes, and marshes. These watery places are where they lay their eggs and where their young grow up.
