Muhlenbergia microsperma is a type of grass that has a cool common name: littleseed muhly. You can find this plant growing naturally in many parts of the Americas. It stretches from the Southwestern United States and California all the way through Central America down to countries like Peru and Venezuela.

What is Littleseed Muhly?

Littleseed muhly is usually an annual or perennial grass. This means it can either grow for just one season or come back year after year. It can reach a height of about 60 to 80 centimeters. That's roughly the height of a small child!

What Does it Look Like?

The plant has a special part called an inflorescence. This is like the flower cluster of the grass. It looks like an open, spreading group of thin branches. On these branches, you'll find small parts called spikelets. Each spikelet has a long, bristle-like part called an awn. These awns can be up to 3 centimeters long.

Interestingly, some of the spikelets that are lower down on the plant stay hidden. They remain inside their protective sheaths and don't open up or bloom.

Where Does it Grow?

This grass is quite adaptable! You can find littleseed muhly growing in many different types of places. It often pops up in areas that have been disturbed. This could be places where the ground has been moved or changed, like along roadsides or in fields.
