Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary
The littoral zone of an ocean is the area close to the shore and extending out to the edge of the continental shelf.

The littoral zone is the part of a sea, lake, or river that is close to the shore. Think of it as the area where the land meets the water. In coastal environments, like beaches, the littoral zone stretches from the highest point the water reaches (the high water mark) down to areas that are always under water. This zone always includes the intertidal zone, which is the area between high and low tides. Sometimes, "littoral zone" is used to mean the same thing as the intertidal zone, but it can actually cover a much larger area.

In oceanography and marine biology, which are studies of the ocean and its life, the idea of the littoral zone is often stretched out to the very edge of the continental shelf. This shelf is the underwater landmass that extends from a continent.

What is the Littoral Zone?

The littoral zone is a special area where land and water meet. It includes parts that are sometimes wet and sometimes dry, as well as parts that are always covered by water.

Littoral Zones in Oceans and Seas

In oceans and seas, the littoral zone is very important. It starts at the shore and can go out quite far. This area is full of life because it gets a lot of sunlight and nutrients. Many different kinds of plants and animals live here, from tiny crabs hiding under rocks to large fish swimming in the shallow waters.

Littoral Zones in Lakes and Rivers

Lakes and rivers also have littoral zones. In these freshwater places, the littoral zone is usually where sunlight can reach the bottom. This allows plants to grow, which then provides food and shelter for many animals. For example, the three main parts of a lake are:

  • The littoral zone (near the shore)
  • The open-water zone (the middle, sunny part)
  • The deep-water zone (the bottom, darker part)

Why is the Littoral Zone Important?

The littoral zone is a very important habitat for many living things. It acts like a nursery for young fish and other marine creatures. It also helps protect the land from strong waves and storms. Estuaries, which are places where rivers meet the sea, are also part of the littoral zone. These areas are especially rich in life and are vital for many species.
