Our Story

The Living Coast Discovery Center first opened its doors in 1987. Back then, it was called the Chula Vista Nature Center. The City of Chula Vista owned and ran it.

In 2010, the center became its own independent organization. It changed its name to the Living Coast Discovery Center. It became a "501(c)(3) non-profit." This means it's a special kind of organization that uses all its money to help its cause, not to make a profit for owners.

Our Mission

The Living Coast Discovery Center wants to inspire everyone to connect with and care for our coastal environment. Their main goal is to have a healthy natural coast. They want to achieve this by:

  • Working with others to help restore coastal wetlands and bays.
  • Providing great education for students. They focus on STEAM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics.
  • Helping people learn more about coastal environments. This includes understanding how animals and plants can live with changes in weather. They also teach about how humans can live together with the natural resources of San Diego Bay.
