A Look at Lizas's Past
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a special territory of the United States.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States government did a count of all the people living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Lizas and a nearby area called Calzada had a total of 1,233 people living there together.
