A Look Back: Calzada's History
Puerto Rico has an interesting history! After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.
In 1899, the United States Department of War took a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that Calzada and a nearby community called Lizas had a combined population of 1,233 people.
