Llewellyn, Tasmania is a small village located in the Somerset Land District of Tasmania, Australia. You can find it on the road that connects Campbell Town, Tasmania to the eastern coast. This quiet spot is also close to the South Esk River.

Discovering Llewellyn

Llewellyn is sometimes called Stony Creek. This name comes from a small stream that flows into the South Esk River. Long ago, a local Tasmanian Aboriginal group, the Tyerrernotepanner clan, was also known by the name Stony Creek.

A Look Back in Time

The name Llewellyn first appeared in old newspapers in 1845. At that time, plans were being made to survey the area as a new township.

In 1873, a hotel opened its doors in Llewellyn. It was run by someone from nearby Campbell Town. By 1886, a special railway stop, called a siding, was built. A wooden bridge, known as a trestle bridge, was also constructed over Stony Creek. However, even with these new additions, the hotel started to lose customers.

The Town's Busy Days

By 1899, Llewellyn was quite active. The village even hosted two horse race meetings that year! The town had grown to include at least two streets.

However, this busy period did not last long. By 1903, the hotel had already closed. Business in the area was slowing down. Records from that year show that the only public building left in Llewellyn was the school. The post office was even located inside a private home.

Llewellyn Today

Today, Llewellyn is much quieter than it used to be. It is often called a "ghost" of its past self. It remains marked on maps as a specific location and still has its railway siding.
