Understanding the Llobregat Delta
A delta is a landform that looks like a triangle. It forms when a river flows into a larger body of water, like an ocean or a lake. The river slows down and drops the sand and mud it carries. This material builds up over time, creating new land. Deltas are often very rich in nature.
Protected Natural Areas of the Llobregat Delta
The Natural Areas of the Llobregat Delta (Catalan: Espais Naturals del Delta del Llobregat) is a group of protected areas. These areas were set up in 1987 to keep nature safe. They cover more than 900 hectares (about 2,200 acres) on the eastern side of the river.
Why These Areas Are Protected
These natural spaces are very important for wildlife. They have been named a Special Protection Area. This means they are officially recognized for protecting wild birds. The European Union has rules, called the Birds Directive, to help protect these birds and their homes.
Where the Protected Areas Are Located
These protected areas are found across several towns. These include El Prat de Llobregat, Viladecans, Gavà, and Sant Boi de Llobregat. They all work together to look after this special natural space.
