The lake in 2008

Llyn Traffwll is a beautiful natural lake in Anglesey, Wales. It covers about 91 acres of water. You can find it between the villages of Rhosneigr and Valley, not far from the main A55 road. It's special because it's the biggest natural lake on Anglesey. Other large lakes like Llyn Alaw and Llyn Cefni are actually reservoirs, which are man-made lakes used to store water.

Why is Llyn Traffwll Important?

Llyn Traffwll and the smaller lakes around it are part of a special protected area. This area is called a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This means it's a very important place for nature and wildlife. It's also right next to the Valley Wetlands site, which is managed by the RSPB. The RSPB is a charity that works to protect birds and their habitats.

How Was the Lake Used in the Past?

A long time ago, starting in 1866, Llyn Traffwll helped supply water to the town of Holyhead. The Holyhead Water Company used the lake for this purpose. To help manage the water, a small dam was built. This dam is still there today.

Future Plans Near the Lake

In 2019, there were plans to build a very large solar power farm near Llyn Traffwll. This farm, called Parc Solar Traffwl, would cover about 300 acres. A Photovoltaic power station uses special panels to turn sunlight into electricity. This helps create clean energy for homes and businesses.

Llyn Traffwll in Stories

The lake has even inspired writers! A Welsh language novel called Madam Wen, Arwes yr Ogof is set by Llyn Traffwll. It was written by William David Owen. This shows how important and beautiful the lake is to the local area and its culture.
