Exploring the Geography of Loch Leitir Easaidh
Loch Leitir Easaidh is on the eastern side of a flat, low area. Many other lochs are nearby to the east. These lochs all drain into the Loch Inver area. To the north of this flat land, there is a long crack in the Earth's crust. This crack, called a fault, runs from northwest to southeast. It goes through Loch Assynt and Loch Leitir Easaidh. It continues past Gleannan Salach, Loch na Loinne, and Loch Poll all the way to the coast.
The Quinag Mountains
North and northeast of the loch are the three peaks of the Quinag mountains. Their name in Scottish Gaelic is A’ Chuineag. These mountains have a unique Y-shaped crest. The three main summits are known as Corbetts. A Corbett is a Scottish mountain between 2,500 and 3,000 feet high.
The three peaks are:
- Quinag - Sail Gorm at 776 meters (2,546 feet)
- Quinag - Sail Gharbh at 808 meters (2,651 feet)
- Quinag - Spidean Coinich at 764 meters (2,507 feet)
