Locomotive Mountain is a cool peak in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, Canada. It stands about 2,340 metres (7,680 feet) (7,677 feet) tall. This mountain is part of a group called the Railroad Group.

You can find Locomotive Mountain about 35 km (22 mi) northwest of a town called Pemberton. It's also just 2.1 km (1 mi) south of a taller mountain named Face Mountain. Water that melts from the peak flows into rivers that eventually join the Fraser River.

The name "Locomotive Mountain" was suggested in 1978 by a mountain climber named Karl Ricker. He was part of the Alpine Club of Canada. The name fits in with other nearby places that have railroad-themed names, like Railroad Pass and Railroad Creek. The name became official on January 23, 1979.

Mountain Weather

Locomotive Mountain is in a subarctic climate zone. This means it has long, cold winters and short, cool summers. Most of the weather that affects the mountain comes from the Pacific Ocean. These weather systems move east towards the Coast Mountains.

When the air hits the mountains, it's forced to rise. This process is called orographic lift. As the air rises, it cools down and drops its moisture. This causes a lot of rain or snow to fall on the Coast Mountains, especially in winter.

Winter temperatures on the mountain can drop below −20 °C (–4 °F). With the wind chill, it can feel even colder, sometimes below −30 °C (–22 °F). The cold climate and heavy snowfall help to keep the Train Glacier alive on the mountain's northern side.

The best time to climb Locomotive Mountain is usually from July to September. The weather is much better and safer during these months.
