Lodewijk Frans Asscher (born 27 September 1974) is a Dutch politician and a legal expert. He was the leader of the Labour Party (PvdA) from 2016 to 2021. He also led his party's group in the House of Representatives, which is part of the Dutch parliament, from 2017 to 2021.
Before becoming a national politician, Asscher worked as a researcher at the University of Amsterdam. He then became a local politician in Amsterdam. He served as an alderman and even as the acting mayor of Amsterdam for a short time. Later, he became the Deputy Prime Minister of the Netherlands and the Minister of Social Affairs and Employment in the Dutch government.

Early Life and Education
Lodewijk Frans Asscher was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on 27 September 1974. His family had different religious backgrounds. His father was of Jewish descent, and his mother was Catholic.
He went to high school at the Christelijk Gymnasium Sorghvliet in The Hague. After that, he studied psychology and Dutch law at the University of Amsterdam. He earned his master's degree in law in 1998. In 2002, he completed his PhD in law from the same university.
Political Career
Starting in Amsterdam Politics
Asscher began his political journey in 2002. He was elected as a member of the municipal council in Amsterdam. This council helps run the city. He quickly became the leader of the Labour Party group in the Amsterdam council.
From 2002 to 2006, he also taught about information law at the University of Amsterdam.
After the local elections in 2006, Asscher became an alderman for Amsterdam. An alderman is like a city council member who is in charge of specific areas. His responsibilities included things like the city's economy, airport, and harbor. He was also the Deputy Mayor of Amsterdam from 2006 to 2010.
When the Mayor of Amsterdam, Job Cohen, stepped down, Asscher served as the acting mayor. This was from March 2010 to July 2010. After that, he was an alderman in charge of the city's finances until 2012.
Moving to National Politics
In November 2012, Lodewijk Asscher joined the national government. He became the Deputy Prime Minister of the Netherlands. This means he was the second-in-command to the Prime Minister. He also became the Minister of Social Affairs and Employment. In this role, he was responsible for policies about jobs and social support for people.
In 2016, Asscher ran for the leadership of the Labour Party. He won the election on 9 December 2016, becoming the new leader of the party.
In the 2017 national election, the Labour Party lost many seats in parliament. After this, the party did not join the new government. Asscher continued to lead the Labour Party in parliament.
In January 2021, Asscher decided to step down as party leader. This was due to his role as a minister in a past issue involving social benefits. He later started working as a partner at a consulting firm.

Lodewijk Asscher is married to Jildau Piena. They got married in 2007. Together, they have three sons.
