Hugo Mattheüs de Jonge was born on September 26, 1977. He is a Dutch politician. Since September 16, 2024, he has been the acting King's Commissioner of Zeeland. This role is like a governor for the Zeeland province.
He is a member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) political party. In 2020, he was chosen to lead his party for the 2021 general election. However, he later stepped down. He said it was too hard to be both the party leader and the Health Minister during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Later, he served in the government led by Mark Rutte. From 2022 to 2024, he was the Minister for Housing and Spatial Planning. He also served as Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations from 2023 to 2024.

Early Life and Education
Hugo de Jonge first studied to become a primary school teacher. He went to a university of applied sciences in Rotterdam. After that, he studied school management in Zwolle. He earned a diploma to be a school leader for primary education.
He worked as a teacher for five years. He also became a deputy director at a primary school.
In 2004, De Jonge started working in national politics. He became a policy assistant for the CDA group in the House of Representatives. This is like the main parliament in the Netherlands. From 2006 to 2010, he worked at the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. He was a political assistant and helped with improving secondary education.
Political Career
Working as an Alderman
In 2010, Hugo de Jonge became an alderman in Rotterdam. An alderman is like a city council member who is in charge of certain topics. He was responsible for Education, Youth, and Family matters. In 2013, he spoke on national television about problems at a specific Islamic school. He believed the school association should be closed.
After the 2014 city elections, De Jonge became an alderman again. This time, he was in charge of Healthcare. In the same year, he was named "Politician of the Year" in Rotterdam. In 2016, he started a program to help vulnerable parents make good choices for their families. When he left Rotterdam politics in 2017, he received a special award called the Wolfert van Borselenpenning.
Becoming a Minister
In October 2017, De Jonge was appointed Deputy Prime Minister. He also became the Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport. This was part of the government led by Prime Minister Mark Rutte. When he was sworn in, his unique choice of shoes got a lot of attention in the news!
When the Minister for Medical Care, Bruno Bruins, resigned in March 2020, Hugo de Jonge took over. He became responsible for the government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He helped start the development of a special app to help track the virus.
On June 18, 2020, De Jonge announced he wanted to become the leader of the Christian Democratic Appeal party. He won the vote against Pieter Omtzigt.
As Minister for Housing and Spatial Planning, De Jonge worked on new laws. He introduced the Good Landlordship Act to make sure rented homes were fair. This law passed in March 2023. He also proposed changes to control rent prices for more homes. He worked on a bill to make sure a certain percentage of new homes were affordable. This became law in July 2024.
His time as a minister ended on July 2, 2024. After that, he became the acting King's Commissioner of Zeeland on September 16, 2024.
Political Views
When he ran for the CDA leadership, Hugo de Jonge said he wanted his party to be in the political middle. He sees the CDA as a "broad people's party," meaning it should appeal to many different types of people.
He is seen as less focused on strict economic rules than some past leaders. He has suggested that the market and competition in healthcare should be managed more carefully. He also believes his party should not work with certain right-wing populist parties.
