Hugo Mattheüs de Jonge (born 26 September 1977) is a Dutch politician. He is currently the acting King's Commissioner of Zeeland. This means he helps lead the province of Zeeland. He is a member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) political party.

Before this, he held several important jobs in the Dutch government. He was a minister for housing and spatial planning. He also served as the Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hugo de Jonge's Early Life and Career

Hugo de Jonge started his career in education. He studied to become a teacher for primary schools. After that, he continued his studies to learn how to manage a school. He earned a special diploma for school leaders.

De Jonge worked as a teacher for five years. He also became a deputy director at a primary school. This means he helped the main director run the school.

In 2004, he started working in national politics. He became a policy assistant for the CDA party in the House of Representatives. From 2006 to 2010, he worked at the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. Here, he helped ministers and focused on making secondary education better.

Hugo de Jonge's Political Journey

Alderman in Rotterdam

In 2010, Hugo de Jonge became an alderman in the city of Rotterdam. An alderman is like a city council member who is in charge of specific areas. De Jonge was responsible for education, youth, and family matters.

Later, in 2014, he was again appointed an alderman. This time, his job was to oversee healthcare in Rotterdam. In the same year, he was named "Politician of the Year" in Rotterdam. When he left Rotterdam politics in 2017, he received a special award from the city.

Becoming a Minister

In October 2017, De Jonge became a Deputy Prime Minister. He also became the Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport. This was part of the Third Rutte cabinet, led by Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

When the COVID-19 pandemic started, De Jonge became very important. He was in charge of the government's response to the virus. He helped create a special app to help track the virus.

In 2020, he ran to become the leader of his party, the CDA. He won the vote against Pieter Omtzigt. However, he later decided to step down from this role. He felt it was too hard to lead the party while also managing the country's response to the pandemic.

After the pandemic, De Jonge became the Minister for Housing and Spatial Planning. In this role, he worked on making housing more fair and affordable. He introduced new laws to regulate rented homes. He also proposed that a certain percentage of new homes should be affordable for everyone. These new rules started in July 2024.

His time as a minister ended on 2 July 2024. On 16 September 2024, he started his new role as the acting King's Commissioner of Zeeland.

Hugo de Jonge believes his party, the CDA, should be a "broad people's party." This means it should appeal to many different kinds of people. He is seen as being more focused on social issues than some past leaders of his party. For example, he has said that the market should not control healthcare too much.
