Sybrand van Haersma Buma (born 30 July 1965) is a Dutch politician. He has been the Mayor of Leeuwarden since 2019. Before that, he was a member of the House of Representatives from 2002 to 2019. He also led the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) political party from 2012 to 2019.
Sybrand van Haersma Buma's Story
Early Life and Family
Sybrand van Haersma Buma comes from an old and important family in Friesland, a province in the Netherlands. His father, Bernard van Haersma Buma, was also a mayor, serving in Workum and Sneek. His grandfather was also a mayor in Stavoren. Both his father and grandfather were part of a political party called the Christian Historical Union (CHU). This party later joined with two other parties, the Catholic People's Party (KVP) and the Anti-Revolutionary Party (ARP), to form the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) in 1980.
Sybrand van Haersma Buma studied law at the University of Groningen from 1983 to 1989. He also took a course at the Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge in England from 1989 to 1990. After finishing his studies, he worked for the Council of State and the Ministry of the Interior. These are important government organizations in the Netherlands.
His Political Journey
In the late 1990s, Sybrand van Haersma Buma became involved with the Christian Democratic Appeal party. He was a secretary for the party in The Hague and a member of its leadership committee in the province of South Holland.
From January to June 2002, he was a member of the local council in Voorburg. In May 2002, he became a member of the Dutch House of Representatives. This is like being a member of parliament. He became known for his focus on "law and order," meaning he wanted strong rules to keep society safe. From 2007 to 2010, he was the secretary for his party's group in the House of Representatives.
Even though his party lost the elections in June 2010, Sybrand van Haersma Buma was re-elected to the House of Representatives. He supported his party's leader, Maxime Verhagen, during talks to form a new government. These talks led to a government made up of the VVD and CDA parties, with support from the PVV party. When Maxime Verhagen became a Deputy Prime Minister, Sybrand van Haersma Buma was chosen to take his place as the leader of the CDA group in the House of Representatives.
Later, the government broke apart. Sybrand van Haersma Buma then decided to run for the leadership of his party. In May 2012, he was chosen by most CDA members to be their top candidate for the next election. He also worked with leaders from other parties to agree on a budget plan for 2013.
After the 2017 general election, the CDA joined a new government called the Third Rutte cabinet. However, Sybrand van Haersma Buma chose to stay in the House of Representatives as the leader of his party's group, instead of joining the government as a minister.
On 16 May 2019, Sybrand van Haersma Buma was chosen to be the new Mayor of Leeuwarden. He officially started this job on 26 August 2019. His role as parliamentary leader in the House of Representatives was taken over by Pieter Heerma on 21 May 2019.
