History of Loftus Versfeld Stadium

The stadium is named after Robert Loftus Owen Versfeld. He was a very important person who helped start organised sports in Pretoria. Even though the stadium's official name changed a few times because of sponsors, most local people always called it "Loftus."

The area where the stadium stands was first used for sports in 1906. Back then, it was just called the Eastern Sports Ground. The first concrete building was put up by the city in 1923. This early structure could only fit 2,000 people and did not have good sports facilities.

In 1928, the Pretoria rugby group made a lot of money from a tour by the All Blacks. They used this money to build changing rooms and toilets.

When Mr. Loftus Versfeld passed away in May 1932, the Pretoria rugby group decided to rename the Eastern Sports Ground after him. This was a way to honour his memory. Since then, it has been known as Loftus Versfeld Stadium. The stadium has been improved many times over the years, including a big upgrade in 1984.

Pitch Quality at the Stadium

Sometimes, the playing field, or pitch, at Loftus Versfeld has been talked about. In January 2025, some people felt the pitch was not in the best condition. This was after a big soccer game between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates. The pitch had been used a lot for rugby and other events before that match.
